September 2011

Better late than never is what I hope everyone is thinking, now I’ve finally got around to organising and releasing a new fanzine, compilation cd and the last two cd-r singles on the label. I hope they are all going to be worth the wait. First of all we have what would have been the hit of the summer if I’d actually managed to release it in the summer: Never Let Me Down by Play People. The second is the folksy psychedelic sound of Sunrain and Born Alone. Both releases are 4 track e.p.’s, there will hopefully be an mp3 from each of them on the records page very soon as well as details on how to order them. Number six of the fanzine has been a long time in the making but it’s finally here and accompanied by a splendid 11 track compilation cd with lots of tracks that I hope will become some of your favourites.

september

The compilation cd
just who is the 5 ‘o’ clock hero has tracks by John Egdell, Let’s Whisper, A Classic Education, Apple Orchard, Dog Years, Blanche Hudson Weekend, The Monorals, Sunday School Adventure Club, Play People, Mystery Music and St. Marie, they are also in the fanzine alongside writing on the lucksmiths, beth jeans houghton, george washington brown, pains of being pure at heart, rachel lancaster, eels, field music, blackflower and les cox (sportif).

August 2009

A couple of new releases this month. The first is a three band compilation called streets of your town. It was originally part of the goodie bag that was given away to the first 50 paying customers through the door at the White Town gig at the Head of Steam back in July. So for those people who couldn’t make it along to the gig for whatever the reason, maybe you were on holiday, washing your hair or it was just a bit too far, it is now your chance to get a this almighty pop! gig artifact!. For a limited time (until they run out!) you get to choose which badge you would like, White Town, The Honda Express or Kosmonaut. When you order please let me know which one you would prefer maybe include an alternative incase your first choice has gone.

The second release is this almighty pop! 02, a three track e.p. from Stoke’s finest Horowitz, the reason it’s 02 is that Horowitz were the second band that I asked to be on my label, that was about a year ago now. I never really expected them to say yes, but they did and since then they have been not so quietly beavering away on three fuzzy pop moments that will truly make your heart beat faster, well Super Snuggles and Winona will but The Boy From Whatstandwell might have you up waltzing to it’s almost jazz tinged vibes. Before I go can I also just mention the fact that Pete was the ball boy stood behind the goal at Wembley in 1973 when Ian Porterfield scored that little beauty which won Sunderland the FA Cup, get in!

June 2009 (part two)

I’ve finally plucked up the courage to put on another gig. This one takes place on Sunday the 12th July at the Head of Steam in Newcastle. Headlining the night will be
White Town, it will be Jyoti’s first UK in about 14 years, so quite an event in itself. Support is provided by The Honda Express who were formed out of the ashes of Strawberry Story. First band of the night will be Kosmonaut who recently got back together to help promote their e.p. which is coming out soon on Cloudberry. The first 50 paying customers through the door will get themselves a goodie bag of surprises, well a cd featuring the three bands, badges and couple of other things too. Hope to see you there.

It really was only a matter of time before I managed to release a cd by a Swedish band. Hopefully this one by
Lets’s Say We Did is the first of many. The A-side Come On Honey is a slice of sunkissed Scottish soul music made in Stockholm, with guitars that must have been bought in Glasgow or Edinburgh. The sleeve should have been designed by David Band just to finish things off nicely. You can find out more about the band on their myspace .

Here comes the first release of 2009. It’s a two track CD by
Countryside. I still find that there is nothing much better than songs about the summer in wintertime to warm you up a treat. Summer Is Here and Estuary have both got me longing for those warmer days that I hope are not too far away. I first saw Countryside play in a church during the summer of 2007. A great wash of sound rushed over me as I stood and listened to them. They looked and sounded like outsiders. Some of the gear they were using may have looked home made, but they still managed to get majestic sounds to pour out of their amplifiers. They were different, I liked that . They blew a fresh burst of air through that church with their certain something special. They looked young yet the songs seeped of nostalgia. I hope you will let Countryside fill your head with a glorious wall of noise, interference and beauty.

I’ve been meaning to sort out the first four issues of the fanzine for a few people who wanted to complete their collection for quite some time now, originally I planned to sell them as a bundle with a cd-r of the songs from all the flexi-discs that came with them when they were first released, I wrongly believed all of the flexi’s had long gone. But on a recent rummage in my garage I happened across a box inside an old kitchen unit which on opening I discovered a number of copies of the three flexi-discs that I released on my Dolphin 7 label. So there is now a few almighty pop bundles which are now complete, they include a copy of the first four issues of this almighty pop! and the three flexi-discs. For more info on them have a look on the fanzine page of the site.

It just keeps getting better, it's  a little over two weeks since the release of the debut single on the label by Play People and now
this almighty pop! 04 is available. It's a four track e.p. called POP! by Phil Wilson . Phil covers four pop classics , hence the title of the e.p. The songs are The Cure's - "Boys Don't Cry",  Felt's -  "Penelope Tree" , The Field Mice's - "Emma's House" and Belle and Sebastian's - "A Century Of Fakers".  I'm sure I don't have to mention that Phil was once in the June Brides, who were one of my favourite bands from probably 20 years ago. This release happened after Phil bought a copy of number five of my fanzine and I cheekily wrote to him and asked if he would be interested in releasing a record on my soon to be started record label, never expecting for a moment that he would say yes, but he did! This is it! I hope you like it as much as I do.

If you haven't already you should check out the
Slumberland double 7" "Industrial Strength by Phil where he covers songs by Faust, Throbbing Gristle, S/T and Kraftwerk and makes them his own. There will also be a third release of covers called New Wave on the German label Edition 59 which should be out in a month or so.

It’s a two track affair with ‘Oh What A Life...” joined by “Don’t Come Back”. I’m sure you would like to hear the songs first, and you can if you head on over to the bands web site here
www.playpeoplemusic.com. Then pop back here and click on the records link above and buy yourself a copy.

Yes! I am now a record label and it feels brilliant! It’s totally d.i.y. , I’ve printed the sleeves, burnt the CD’s and rubber stamped them. If I’d known it was going to be this easy to start a label I would have done it ages ago. I want to release a new record everyday, but I may have to settle for one every month or so. The next three releases are lined up. The first of which should be ready within two weeks, I won’t say who it’s by just yet, but it does includes 4 more perfect pop moments.

The response to the release  of number five of this almighty pop has been quite wonderful. I couldn’t have dreamt it would do so well. Before I go any further I would like to thank everyone who has bought it so far and I’d also like to thank everyone who has mentioned it on their web site or blog, you have really boosted the sales, cheers. I must also say a big big big thank you to Amy who has been spreading the word about it all over the place and she has also set up a fan page for it on
Facebook. I must return the favour and tell you about Amy’s fanzine Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams which has just reached issue number three, it comes with an excellent CD compilation, with only one duff track on it and that’s by someone called northern electrix! You really should buy it , get the back issues as well and try out the banana muffin recipe in number one. I just have and they were lovely.

It’s taken me a lot longer than expected to finish off the new issue but this almighty pop! number five is now ready to go. It’s a 28 page A5 fanzine printed by me at home because if no one buys it I don’t want loads of copies just sat in boxes in my garage for years. The initial print run is in colour.

It also comes with the modern day equivalent of the flexi-disc ... the compilation cd-r. The CD
the sun shines here features tracks by 8 of the bands in the fanzine. They are Horowitz, Withered Hand, Blackflower, Kathryn Williams, Still Corners, The Simple Carnival, Cocoanut Grooove and Jeans Goes POP! I think it would make the perfect soundtrack to the end of anyone’s summer.
